Turkey is advancing the construction of a new Floating Production Unit (FPU), which is specifically designed for natural gas extraction in the Black Sea. This initiative will further improve the country’s energy infrastructure.
Turkey has reached an agreement with a Chinese enterprise to introduce this new FPU, which will be structured in the form of a vessel to support natural gas production in the Black Sea. In accordance with this contract—covering engineering design, equipment procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning—the construction of the platform has already commenced in China. The new unit will be designed with reference to the existing Osman Gazi FPU, adopting a ship-based structure with a total length of 273 meters, a width of 54 meters, and a depth of 26 meters. It will be moored on the seabed at a water depth of approximately 2,200 meters, around 2,200 kilometers away from the coastline. To ensure stability, the platform will be equipped with 4 mooring systems (comprising a total of 180 cables) and will feature on-board accommodation facilities capable of housing 150 personnel.
The FPU will be responsible for extracting raw natural gas from on-site wells, while simultaneously carrying out key operations such as well control, water separation, gas drying, compression, and metering. After treatment, the natural gas will be transported to the mainland via subsea pipelines and directly connected to Turkey’s national natural gas transmission network. The platform has a daily production capacity of up to 25 million cubic meters; in the first phase, it will extract natural gas from 27 deep-sea wells, with the initial daily production target set at 20 million cubic meters.
Black Sea Gas Output to Quadruple by 2028
When discussing the project, Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, stated that after the new FPU is put into operation, the daily natural gas production in the Black Sea region will increase to 40 million cubic meters.
Bayraktar pointed out that the current daily natural gas production of the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea stands at 9.5 million cubic meters. He further emphasized that the Osman Gazi FPU, scheduled to start operations in mid-2026, will achieve a daily production capacity of 20 million cubic meters once it is fully operational.
